Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek

  • Duration22 Days
Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek has been created geographically because of the drainage of Shear Khola, which rises from western Ganesh Himal's glaciers and from east south glaciers of Sringi Himal, converging at Nyak along Budhi Gandaki. Renamed "Tsum," it is a valley that consists of wild natural beauty with abundant amounts of wild animals, such as the Himalayan Thar and blue sheep that have been thriving in strict protection from hunting and fishing. This valley houses a number of historic and quite unique monasteries, with the Rachen Gumba and Mu Gumba set on scenic plateaus, while Lungdang Gumba stands atop a conical hill. The place has very rich history related to Buddhism, starting with the meditation of the Buddhist saint Milarepa in the local caves.

Traditionally, Tsum Valley was known as "Tsum Tso Chuksum," which translates into "thirteen provinces ruled as one territory," and some vestiges of the ancient Tsum Kingdom can be seen even today. Because it has been isolated and inaccessible, this sacred valley and its people have been protecting the culture from mainstream development for centuries. Thus, Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is one of the best off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal. It lies between Budhi Gandaki in the east and Marshandi Khola in the west. Major attractions here are Baudha Himal, Gorkha Himal, and Himal Chuli along with gigantic Manaslu and Annapurna ranges together with varied forests and wildlife over the ridges.

It starts from Gorkha and traces the Budhi Gandaki River, which cuts a wild gorge besides native Gurung communities and important Buddhist monasteries whose spires can be noticed sticking out from the top valleys. The Marshyangdi River flows mostly in Gurung communities during the first days of trekking, and a big population of Brahmins in the lower parts. This part is just stunning, with lots of beautiful waterfalls dropping into the main river, with very gentle altitude gain and minimal risk of AMS. On the fourth day, the river swings to come in from the south, through some steep, rocky gorges lined with extensive pine forests and ancient temples representing the pre-Buddhist Bon religion.

The geographical and climatic variation is so immense that this region houses a wide array of flora and fauna. The landscape cultivated is one of terrace paddy fields and rolling hills, particularly noted for winter crops of oranges. North of the mountains in the rain shadow area, the landscape becomes barren - an extension of the great Tibetan plateau. Other vegetation also changes with the gain in altitude from tropical species to temperate forests of oak, beech, and rhododendron that in turn give way to coniferous forests of pine and juniper just below the tree line. Other common wildlife sightings are barking deer, Himalayan marmots, exclusive pheasants, and various alpine birds like ravens and crows. In general, trekking is far more demanding compared to most treks; only well-prepared and adequately equipped people for various conditions can attempt this adventure, allowing extra days for possible side trips that will pretty much enrich the experience.
Experience the 18 day Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, winding through majestic mountains, remote villages, and a culturally vibrant Himalayan region.
  • Enjoy a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, exploration of Mu and Lungdang Gompas in the Tsum Valley.
  • Visit the sacred sites like Milarepa's Piren Phu Cave and historic Dephyudonma and Rachen Monasteries.
  • Trek around Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m) is the eighth highest mountain of the world and possible sidetrip to Birendra Lake, Punhyen Glacier, or Manaslu Base Camp. Enjoy the spectacular views of glaciers, lakes, peaks such as Manaslu, Himchuli, and Ganesh on the Nepal-Tibet border.
  • Cross the challenging Larkya La Pass at 5,106 m, the development of a unique Tibetan-Nupri and Gurung culture, with ancient stupas and monasteries lying along a route that few people travel on, once an ancient trade route to Tibet.

What to Expect from Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek?

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a unique mixture of spectacular natural beauty and rich cultural variety found in Nepal. This beautiful area greets you with spectacular mountain scenery, steep terraced hills, and deep canyons while exploring it. A large part of the route follows the valleys of Budhi Gandaki and Marsyangdi rivers, so one keeps on getting breathtaking views.
Along the way, different peaks such as Mt. Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world at 8,163 m, Ganesh Himal, and Singri will appear. The area is still predominantly Tibetan, reflecting in its architecture and customs dotted with several monasteries and gompas, most especially Mu Gompa at 3,700 m above sea level.
The trek also offers views of the magnificent coexistence of ancient Bon, Vajrayana Buddhism and Hinduism through various Chortens and Mani walls adorning the landscape. Varied flora and fauna, including some endangered species, densely fill the forests of this trek, hence allowing glimpses into lush vegetation and local wildlife to come forth.
While the trek can be quite challenging and at times includes high-altitude crossing like that of Larkya La Pass, the rewards are in the form of spectacular views and lifetime experiences. You also get the opportunity to interact with the locals, enjoying their hospitality and learning how to live a life so traditionally connected with the Himalayas. In a nutshell, the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Trek is an exciting odyssey that combines some striking natural beauty with an overwhelming cultural experience. Therefore, this is something which no trekker or lover of nature would like to miss.

Immerse yourself in the culture, people, and Buddhist practices of the Manaslu Tsum Valley.

Recently opened Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is an unexploited and mysterious Himalayan region rich in unique culture and traditions. The locals, also known as Tsumbas, refer to themselves as the people from "Beyul Kyimolung," meaning the hidden valley of happiness or the Valley of Happiness in their local language. They live in traditional stone houses, hand-carved and designed in Tibetan style. While their architecture, culture, traditions, social norms, values, and religion show strong Tibetan influences, the Tsumbas have retained their own dialects, costumes, and unique lifestyles against the pressures of modernization. They celebrate the Tibetan New Year, Lhosar, which normally falls in February or March. During this time, ancient monasteries come alive with new prayer flags, and the Mani walls, chortens, and gompas complement the beauty of the valley. While trekking to Manaslu, you will go through the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the historical Tsum Valley, which once used to be an important trade route between Nepal and Tibet.

Situated in the Manaslu region of the Gorkha District, this sacred valley remains almost untouched by modernization and is host to a number of cultural, historical, and natural sights: old monasteries, gompas, chortens, mani walls dedicated to Lord Siddhartha Gautam Buddha-a true reflection of attachment of locals to Buddhism. Most Tsumbas are practising Bon as well as Vajrayana Buddhism in active ways, with daily rituals taking place at various monasteries in the valley, like Ranchen Gompa, Mu Gompa, and Gumpa Lungdang Nunnery. These monasteries are artistically fabricated and considered to be of great religious and historic significance, dating back to a time when the saint Milarepa is said to have attained liberation while meditating in a cave there. The rich heritage of this place has resulted in the people of the Manaslu region being hospitable, welcoming, and cheerful while dwelling amidst the challenges of rural life in the Himalayas.

Larkya La Pass of 5,106m is the safest and least traveled trail in Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek.

The highest altitude that you will reach during the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is the Larkya La Pass, which lies at an elevation of 5,106 m (16,748 ft) above sea level. Being the longest high mountain pass in Nepal, it has been acting as a barrier in shielding the Manaslu Trekking Region and its valleys from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The Larke La Pass separates the valleys of the Manaslu area with its great views of Mt. Manaslu-8,416 m, the eighth highest mountain in the world; it connects major mountain villages, Dharamshala and Bimthang, offering striking views of Himlung Himal, Annapurna II, Cheo Himal, and more.

The trend of such a Landscape is difficult to traverse, containing cold Himalayan winds and steep inclines and descents that reveal breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime scenery. That's why Larkya La is called the ultimate challenge and most mythical viewpoint in the Manaslu trek via Tsum Valley due to its diversified landscapes, rare flora and fauna of the Himalayas, and an untouched culture and tradition of the locals.

Although the route to the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is less crowded and involves the demanding Larkya La Pass, it is considered one of the safest trekking trails in Nepal, with a reduced risk of altitude sickness. Contrary to other high mountain passes in Nepal, the overall Tsum Valley Manaslu Trek is a teahouse trek without climbing gears. Thus, you are able to make your journey amazingly without camping gear or climbing equipment. Thus, the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Trek is one of the less traveled yet safe trekking routes within Nepal's Manaslu area.

Today, you will be entering the restricted area of Tsum Valley-an area that is remote and immaculately beautiful. The trek from Jagat will cross over Dudh Pokhari Khola and pass through some villages called Salleri and Siridibas. You may stop for some time to communicate briefly with the local people. Then you will descend down to reach a bridge over Budhi Gandaki River.

Further ahead from the bridge, a bigger village, Philim with a checkpoint where permits are mandatory into Tsum Valley, is encountered. From here, you'll proceed to the village of Lokpa, a rarely visited village sandwiched between the Budhi Gandaki and Siyar Khola rivers-a chance to witness a style of life unlike others.
After breakfast, you head south towards the Siyar Khola banks, following the path through the dense forest in a scenic manner. The trail crosses Lungwaa and Sarli Khola to get to the north bank. Then it will rise gradually to reach Chumling village. Chumling offers a very genuine glimpse into the Tibetan Buddhist way of life that the locals lead. On top of this, the village also boasts the magnificent views of the Ganesh Himal range to the east.

Start your trek from Chumling towards Dumje, walking about two hours; you can have some rest here. You cross the river and scale upwards toward Gho village to reach at your destination. Still, you will get clear views of the range Ganesh Himal. Following a more challenging trail, the route passes through Chaurikharka en route to reaching Chhokang Paro. In this village coloured prayer flags, and also several Buddhist shrines nearby have added to the spirituality in this place.

        • Max. Altitude:3,031m (9,944feet)
Today, after having breakfast, you start the trek on a gentle and flat path on the north bank of Siyar Khola. For this day of the journey, you will be able to go through some peaceful villages named Lamagaun, Bursi, Lar, Phurbey, Chhule, and Pungdun. You can also visit Rachen Gompa and Milerapa Cave en route.
Further ahead, deeper inside the Tsum Valley, you can entwine with its rich culture and rituals of the people living there. Finished with your breakfast, you pack and begin a gentle climb up to Mu Gompa. This is the highest nunnery in the valley, which was established by Drupa Rinpoche, a Bhutanese Lama who meditated for many months in the nearby caves. Mu Gompa is a place where you get to see monks praying and meditating. This monastery stands at an excellent location, which allows having fantastically clear views of the surrounding peaks.
After breakfast, you will continue your trek deeper into the valley and head towards Bursi village. En-route, you will pass through the villages of Kalung and Bhajyo before reaching Bursi. You will be taken to visit Rachen Gompa-one of the oldest monasteries in the vicinity-and a nunnery where local nuns are found. Accommodations are available that enable guests to enjoy a meal of local food and observe daily life by monks and nuns. This visit offers an insight into the very unique Tibetan Buddhist traditions associated both with Nepali and Tibetan cultures.
Leaving Rachen Nunnery, you go downhill back to the village of Chumling again in the same route as a few days previously, which makes this descent pretty easy. You will follow the broad views of the Ganesh Himal range on the horizon.

Today, you leave Chumling for Deng, bidding farewell to Tsum Valley. En route, it passes through the village of Lokpa and crosses the Budhi Gandaki River on a bridge. You will be then on the Manaslu Circuit, which starts the second phase of the trek. Down to Deng, the trail leads you through Buddhist stone arches.

Today's trek is similar in length to yesterday's, following a path through the valley before crossing a bridge and taking a steep, winding climb to the modest village of Lana. Continuing upward through the beautifully set pine forests, you will reach Bihi Phedi, a place where the trail has mani stones dotted all over as a sign of Tibetan cultural influences in these high-altitude regions. Cross the wide Budhi Gandaki and head by way of a gorge; the views continue to be spectacular. The trek today finally ends at Ghap, where a camp will be set up in this pretty village.
The trek today is quite amazing as it goes along the dense forest and across a wooden bridge on Budhi Gandaki. Further, the route follows a gradual uphill climb that leads you to Namrung, which is a Tibetan-run lodge presenting magnificent views of mountains. Again, the trail proceeds through wide pasturelands to reach the old village of Lihi. From Lidanda Glacier, the descent brings you to the picturesque Tibetan village of Sho at 3,000 meters. Hauling yourself up toward Lho will treat you to incredible sights of Ngadi Chuli and Mount Manaslu. In Lho, you will set up camp in a spacious village sprinkled with prayer flags, close to a small lodge and monastery. It is from this campsite that you get fantastic sunset and sunrise views.
Right after breakfast, the trek commences near the new monastery and meanders uphill to the picturesque Tibetan village of Shyala, offering breathtaking mountain panoramas. Continue on an alpine trail, passing through open fields to the historic village of Sama Gaon, over 500 years old, featuring unique wooden architecture and two ancient monasteries. Also close lies the fortress of Dzongka Dzong, close to the Tibetan border, only a few days trek from Sama Gaon. Afternoon, visit the old Gomba above the village and take a little time to wander around the enchanting streets of Sama Gaon. If you are interested, you can have a 2-3 hour side hike to Phungen Gumba (3,870m) once you reached to Shyala in the afternoon.
From Shyala, the trek continues to Pungen Gompa, one of the highlights of the trip. The view is almost breathtaking: Manaslu, Himal Chuli, Nadi Peak, Kutang Himal, and a really beautiful glacier. Having taken in all the views, now slowly descent through the yak pastures to the village of Sama Gaon.
Spend a rest day in Sama Gaon for acclimatization of your body in the high altitude. It is a very good base and has some perfect day trips around. For a shorter trip, you can go for the nearby, beautiful Birendra Lake. For the more adventurous, a trek to Manaslu Base Camp will be an unforgettable adventure, though really quite strenuous. This gives breathtaking views of the Himalayas in all directions if the trail is clear, the weather is clear, and if you feel fit: towering Manaslu and its glacier, Birendra Lake, and huge Tsum Numbri Valley.
Today's motto is "onward and up," as you focus on the ascent toward Larke La. The trail starts easy, with a gentle climb alongside the river, steepening as you approach Samdo around midday. Once you arrive, you'll have plenty of time in the afternoon to explore the village or take a short hike to a higher altitude to help your acclimatization continue.
The trek today goes to the high camp of Dharmasala, which is on the edge of Larkya La. The altitude gains you will find more snow, and the air will get thinner with each step. To better acclimatize and also to sleep better, it is advisable to take a short hike up to a higher altitude before nightfall.

After having very early morning breakfast, the trail forwards to north side of Larkya Glaciers, and opens the views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. After walking for about four hours, you finally reach the top of Larkya La (5,160m), from where you get breathtaking panoramic views of mighty mountains like Himlung Himal (7,126m), Cheo Himal (6,820m), Gyagi Kung, Kang Kuru (6,981m), and Annapurna II (7,937m); all these are appearing stunningly beautiful both sides. The descent is pretty steep as you make your way through the mountains to Bhimthang. Be prepared for a slippery trail as you follow the glacial moraine down to Bhimthang. It is well worth it as evening clouds gather and turn pink behind surrounding peaks.

Today's trek is comparatively easier since you will be going on a downhill trail through a pine forest alongside Dudh Khola. You will cross many tea houses at Yak Kharka/Sangure Kharka (3,020m), Kharche (2,700m), and Goa/Gho (2,515m), and finally reach Tilije (2,300m). En-route, fantastic views of Manaslu are visible most of the time, but especially between Kharche and Goa. It takes about one and a half to two hours of walking through bamboo forests along the Dudh Khola to reach an ACAP board, which is Dharapani. It is your entry point into the main trail of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, where you get an atmospheric Tibetan village with fluttering prayer flags at the Gomba in Thongje. From Dharapani, a road has been constructed, and you can catch a jeep or bus which will drive you to Besisahar. As this will be the last day of the trek, you are going to celebrate the farewell dinner with all your crew members tonight.
After breakfast, we drive to Kathmandu by jeep or bus via Besisahar. Reaching Besisahar takes 3 to 4 hours. This journey is really bumpy, just like your trek in Tal Lake and Chamje, where you pass very beautiful waterfalls en-route. From Besisahar onwards, we take another bus to drive to Kathmandu for about 5 to 6 hours.

You will have free time early on, which you can use to relax at your hotel or take an excursion around the buzzing area of Thamel. At the end of this journey, we will be treating you to a farewell dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant. You also get your Trip Certificate, Trekking Permit, and TIMS Card as mementos of your adventure in Nepal. You will have free time for last-minute shopping for souvenirs or to buy gifts for family and friends until your departure flight. Our team members will bid you a fond farewell at Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, ensuring that the memories will last a lifetime.
